BREEAM-NL EXCELLENT CERTIFICATE FOR NATURE’S PRIDE NEW CONSTRUCTION
The 40,000 m² Nature's Build new construction, designed by the Paul de Ruiter architectural firm, was awarded the BREEAM-NL Excellent design certificate. The award ceremony took place on Thursday, June 6, 2013, at PROVADA. Shawn Harris, founder and director of Nature's Pride, received the certificate from Stefan van Uffelen, director of the Dutch Green Building Council (DGBC).
Nature's Pride is one of the biggest Dutch importers of exotic fruit and vegetables, and the company is building a new distribution and processing center in Maasdijk. The group wishes to take responsibility for the impact that their company activities will have on the community and on the environment. The construction of new accommodation marks the next milestone in their efforts. Stefan van Uffelen: "The new Nature's Pride commercial building was awarded the BREEAM-NL Excellent score, making it one of the top five most sustainable distribution centers in Western Europe." The center was designed by the Paul de Ruiter architectural firm, while DWA acted in an advisory capacity and also led the BREEAM certification process.
Impressive energy savings
This ambition is certainly unique within the fruit and vegetable sector. "The innovative application of a range of techniques has led to the creation of out-of-the-box solutions in order to achieve extremely sustainable results. The range of interventions in process and construction technology provide an impressive energy savings rate of over 30%", says Daniël de Witte, DWA process manager. Because BREEAM-NL certification is generally not issued for this type of building, a particular bespoke procedure was followed.
A new zenith
Shawn Harris: "It's a testament to a lengthy process that we began in 2006. Back then, we as an organization decided to take responsibility for the impact that our activities will have on the community. In the first instance, we focused on improving the social conditions of our growers in the countries from which we import our exotic fruit and vegetables. Nature's Pride also plans to focus on reducing its CO2 footprint by working as much as possible with transport by sea rather than by air. The realization of our new construction is a new high point in our ambition to provide a relevant contribution to the sustainability of our production chain, from cultivation to consumer. We see this certification as a confirmation that we will construct a building that will be seen by all our employees as a fantastic place to work. We would like to thank all our partners for their efforts in supporting us throughout the construction process."
